School Talk and
Fund-Raiser at Raffles Girls' Primary School
On 28 August 2002, the Primary 4 pupils of the Gifted
Education Programme at RGPS organized a Farm Fair as
part of their Community Involvement Project (CIP). The
objective of this fair was to spread responsible pet
ownership messages and also, to raise funds for HRSS.
A talk was given prior the fair by HRSS. This helped
pupils learn why such a society was set up, the importance
of being a responsible pet owner and cleared some misconceptions
pupils had about rabbits.
It was also tied-in with the P4 English concept unit-
Charlotte's Web. This inter-disciplinary approach to
learning was an enjoyable experience for both teachers
and pupils.
Stalls were set up by pupils themselves. They sold
food- cookies, sweets and moooncake in the shape of
animals (spiders and pigs), performed a shadow play,
reader's theatre and puppet theatre using the characters
in Charlotte's Web and even gave comprehension quizzes.
HRSS volunteers set up a booth alongside the children's
and sold HRSS merchandise. Education banners, which
carried messages of being a responsible pet (rabbit)
owner, were put up as well.
The girls learnt to love, care for and respect animals.
They learnt the importance of being a responsible pet
owner. They learnt that a pet is a commitment of a lifetime.
