HRSS Fund-Raiser Flea Market Stall

December was certainly a fun-filled and hectic month for us volunteers at HRSS, with a succession of 3 events in a row to end 2006 with on a positive note.

We held a little fund-raiser mini event on 17th December, which was having our very own flea market stall!

Brand new and pre-loved items from kind donors poured in, making it possible for us to have this stall. Just look at the wide variety of stuff we had on sale - and all at great prices too!

We certainly did very well despite the on-again off-again heavy downpour. The articles were snapped up quickly, flying off the tables. Hurray!

We would like to thank our wonderful volunteers for braving the rain on a Sunday morning and also the people who contributed their wares to make this event happen.

Events Then, Events Now

I remember very vividly of my very first HRSS event. It was at the Youth Park and I had to take Stitch down for his first exposure to potential adoptors.

It was an event organised by CWS and HRSS was a participant. We had a row of tables on which we placed our carriers or cages. Bugs, Bunny, Ace, Gummy and Pop were some of the other foster rabbits that were present as well.

Remembering those times, foster parents took the initiative to bring down their charges and stayed with the rabbits all day. I know I stayed because I wanted to be there for my rabbit, check out who is interested and offer my personal experience with Stitch so that he may find a suitable home.

Even though we started out with cages, which were not very exemplary impressions, I reckon all the foster parents had good times.

As the years have gone by, HRSS began to organise its own events, namely the annual “Yours for Life” event held every April. HRSS improved from cages to playpens so as to impress the public with the idea of a playpen for rabbits.

Grooming services came into place. There are more merchandise to raise funds with. There are more volunteers, of course. And thank every one of them for making each event a success.

It is, however, sad - I think - that many foster parents do not actively participate outside fostering duties. I mean, as a foster parent to a rabbit, I think there is an instilled responsibility to see the rabbit through the lengthy process of finding a loving home.

I mean, a loving foster parent to a child would want to make sure that the adoptive parents are good and trustworthy people. The agent may be able to match the child with an adoptive family but the foster parent should have a part to play and a say as well in the final decision.

I just think it’s logical for a foster parent to be there for his/her foster charge until the moment the charge is handed over to a trusted and approved adoptive parent.

That is just me, really. What do you reckon?

(The Blogathon is over. I wonder how much did we raise. Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, this Blog stays open to the public all the time. So keep coming back for more rabbits, bunnies, lagomorphs, litterboxes, pellets, hay, treats, etc.)

Big is Beautiful

Inspired by this piece of news:

A 27-pound rabbit from Holland is believed to be the world’s longest rabbit, according to a Local 6 News report.

Roberto the 2-year-old Continental Giant is almost 4 feet long and sleeps on a dog’s bed because he can’t fit into a normal-sized hutch. Roberto is larger most 3-year-old children, according to the report.Although Roberto is believed to be the world’s biggest bunny, Guinness World Records said it has stopped listing “biggest animal” titles out of fear that it may lead to people deliberately overfeeding their pets to win the coveted title.Continental Giant rabbits can live for up to 12 years, suggesting that with at least 10 years left, Roberto may still have a bit of growing to do.

*****

A misconception about rabbits occur when they get too big in size >_<

Actually, I'm a huge fan of large sized rabbits, though some people make them out to be scary, vicious and aggressive. On the contrary, Dazzle and her fellow big-sized bunnies would beg to differ. When we attended an event at East Coast Park for a Heavyweight Contest, we had the pleasure of meeting a real life Flemish Giant in person. If I recall correctly, the bunny set a record and he weighed in at a whopping 6 or 8kg!!!! Our Dazz is only about 3.5 kg in comparison.

Just look at the difference in sizes, when side by side with a local bunny (who is also pretty big!):

In fact, there’s a rabbit society set up in the UK just for the rescue of these plus size furries, aptly named “Giant Rabbit Rescue“. The photos on the website will send fuzzies to anyone’s heart, at the sight of teddy bear size rabbits waiting to find new loving homes.

The bunny above was on a harness and pretty much took his owner for a long walk around the event area *grin*. While we do not advocate the use of leashes, in this case, it was pretty impossible and definitely cruel to put (or rather squish) bunny into a carrier. And this bunny seem to be enjoying all the attention from the public as well as the space he had to roam about.
I can just imagine having a big bounding bunny dancing all around my house. How lovely it must be. =D I must start bunny proofing my home as to have free roaming rabbits would be a dream come true for them and for us!

Gigantic Rabbit

A 40kg bunny! How about that… While i would love to have one.. *it must be really nice to be able to give it a bear hug everyday* I think the maintenance will be huge…. But nevertheless, still a great pic to smile about… Aren’t all bunnies lovely? Big or small… hehe..

finally…

finally… baby came out and flopped himself beside creme!

‘i am a brave brave boy!’ *applause applause*

i also finally let my ‘creative juices’ flow and built them a house made out of cardboard. well, actually the design was from jimmy. i finally understood why he made them triangular. it’s triangular so that they wouldn’t jump on top of it to escape. smart move, jimmy!

but look at the insides after 30 minutes…

it’s gonna be gone soon…

creme and gracie could only get close to each other within 20cm of each other…

dashed my hopes of a reunion… sigh..
