|
|
Hi all,
I was thinking we should have a list of bunny maintenance items posted so that we can learn from each other what to use to keep bunny healthy & clean. It will also help us to identify which are the better/safer commercial products to use.
Brand/Product - cost - usage/tips
Lemme start the ball rolling:
Housing Needs
1) Narcissus white vinegar - $1+ - used to remove urine stains, odour, helps in litter training
2) Litter box from Daiso/Ikea - $2 onwards - toilet for bunny
3) PBGone - used to remove urine stains, odour
Feeding Needs
1) Oxbow papaya tablets - $16+ - supplement to prevent hairballs, used sparingly as a treat only
2) Oxbow Orchard Grass/ Timothy Hay - $18+ medium pack - bulk of bunny's diet to provide roughage for adult bunnies
3) Oxbow Basics T - $13+ 5lbs - 2 tablespoons per day for adult bunnies
4) American Pet Dinner High Fibre Timothy Hay - $ 11 medium pack - Very green and fresh, lots of stalks and leaves, higher in fibre, nice smelling
Treats
1) natural food (NPF) mix rabbit - timonthy based $25 for 2.5kg
2) ab (japanese brand) - carrot based $7 for 1kg
Chew toys - Busy Bunny products available at hrss events
1) untreated willow balls
2) apple twigs - $8 for about 6 sticks
3) seagrass mats
Play Toys
* indicates messy but entertaining for bunnies
1) Empty Toilet Roll / Small Baby Toys - for tossing
2) Toilet Roll stuffed with hay* - treats could be stuff in between the hay to encourage them to play
3) Empty color-free boxes/paper bags with holes at the sides/top* - for tearing and hiding
4) Phone Directory* - for tearing
5) Cloths - for pushing/digging around
Grooming Needs
1) Ferplast slicker brush - $9+ - used for short coat bunny to remove any matted fur, usual grooming
2) Pureen pure cornstarch powder - to powder matted fur areas, dust off excess
3) Unscented baby wipes - $2 onwards
4) Flea comb - $7+ found in pharmarcy used for children with head lice - to comb off mites/eggs and dip in hot water to kill them (advised by vet), helps to improve/speed up furmites recovery
pls add to the list & i will update the 1st post. I think this will also give new bunny owners an idea of what they need.

ikea has the willow basket, but i think as long untreated should be fine.
as for mat, it looks like our coasters hor?
not sure if those in hardware stores have been treated with coating or chemical so its better to get busybunny ones in case bunny chews & swallows them (most of them will) |

| Vanodine is an absolute necessity for any breeder (of any animal). We always have it on hand. It kills viruses, bacteria and fungus and is non-toxic and biodegradable. We use is constantly in the rabbitry to spray down cages, disinfect nest boxes after every use (fungus can attack babies skin in a horrible way if not controlled). Controls respiratory diseases much better than anything we have used. After a bordatella infection ran through our herd we simply sprayed the cages down and we are ready to use the cage again for our healthy rabbits. We have been able to reduce our quarantine space by 1/2. We don't have to worry about using it around food and water (like bleach) or around babies because the rabbit can actually eat and drink it. It will reduce bacteria in shared watering systems so prevents spread of snuffles and other things. Inexpensive. |

| 'Litter saver' is another must for breeders. It is a soft, biodegradable fluff which is used in nest boxes. It keeps the babies as warm as rabbits fur, is as soft as fur, is fine for them to chew on, is cheap and you can give the babies enough in case mom doesn't pull enough fur. It's so warm that I have newborns in my outside hutches at 0 degrees F in the winter with no problems at all. If your doe pees in it, you just throw out the fluff and put in new. This way you never have to worry again about how soiled the nest box is and how much fur mom is pulling. It also saves Lionheads from pulling their beautiful manes to make a nest. |
